The "Tricky Triangle" proved to be just that today for Team Lowe's Racing; however, Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus, and the crew were able to put together an impressive 4th place performance despite their setbacks.
In the opening laps, Jimmie Johnson narrowly avoided trouble, as the No. 83 car spun in Turn 1 and missed the No. 48 car by what appearaed to be no more than an inch or two. After avoiding disaster, Johnson drove the car through the field and in to the Top 5 in time for the first set of pit stops, which is where his luck turned for the worse. On Johnson's first trip down pit road of the day, he was charged with speeding on pit road, resulting in a pass-through penalty. When coming down pit road the second time, he was charged with his second penalty for speeding, a problem which plauged a number of drivers throughout the day.
This penalty put Johnson a lap down, but a timely caution allowed Johnson to get back on the lead lap in 24th. From there, Johnson did what he has done in multiple races this season, raced his way through the field. Taking two tires when other cars took four helped gain positions and, in a final effort to pick up track position, the 48 team, along with other cars, opted to remain on the track instead of taking gas, rolling the dice on fuel strategy.
In the end, two sets of cautions helped Johnson's fuel saving efforts, giving them enough gas, and track position, to cross the finish line in 4th. The result helps Johnson remain 5th in points standings, 30 points behind new leader, Matt Kenseth.
