In the pinnacle event of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jimmie Johnson accomplished a feat many athletes only dream about achieving. Sunday evening, Johnson won his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. If that's not impressive enough, Johnson has been competing in NASCAR for 12 years, he has won SIX championships within the last eight years, and to add he is one championship short of the record held by Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty - that's a staggering statistic.
“I am at a loss for words, but I am so proud and so thankful for this opportunity at Hendrick Motorsports,” Johnson said. “I’m thankful that Jeff Gordon and Rick Hendrick gave me this opportunity back in 2002. I’m thankful that Lowe’s came on board...This sport is about people, and our people at Hendrick Motorsports, especially on this No. 48 Lowe’s car, rose up and got the job done. I am so thankful to be able to drive for this race team and so honored and excited to have a six-pack."
After Sunday's race in South Flordia and once JJ captured his coveted "6-pack", the social media world exploded as family, friends, Team 48, drivers, sponsors and fans took to social media channels to recognize the 6x champ!
First, take a behind-the-scenes look of the celebration from the champ's perspective:
