Johnson Completes Triathlon

I

In addition to being a five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion, Jimmie Johnson can also add Triathlon competitor to his résumé. This past weekend Johnson, along with crew members and fellow Hendrick driver, Kasey Kahne, competed in his first triathlon in Charleston, SC. The Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series featured a 600 yard swim followed by a 12 mile bike ride and to top it all off – a 3.1 mile run.

Competing in a triathlon is a feat Johnson has always wanted to conquer.  “I've enjoyed swimming, running and biking through the years and went online looking and saw there was an event that worked out with our cup schedule, relatively speaking,” says Johnson.  After signing up himself, Johnson was able to convince fifteen other colleagues in the racing industry to compete in the triathlon, just hours after the Sprint Cup race in Daytona.

Johnson finished the race in just under one hour and twelve minutes, tweeting shortly after his finish “I cramped on the run and missed my goal by 2 mins.” Fellow teammate Kasey Kahne finished 5th in his age group, conquering the triathlon in 1:11:30, 27 seconds faster than Johnson.

Traveling from Daytona to Charleston after the Coke Zero 400 Saturday evening where Johnson crashed out of the race certainly had an impact on the amount of sleep Johnson had before the big race. “I'm glad we did it. I didn't get much sleep last night especially after racing and all but it was the perfect time to do it, and it was a lot of fun,” Johnson said Sunday.

It looks like Jimmie Johnson fans can expect to see Johnson hitting the asphalt more often, just not in his usual style. For more photos of Jimmie at the traithlon, check out his Twitter page!
