POCONO RECAP: Last weekend at Pocono Raceway, Jimmie Johnson overcame a collision on pit road that sent him to the back of the field for the restart at Lap 76. Undaunted, Johnson propelled his No. 48 Lowe’s/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet SS from 27th to second by Lap 105. He continued to race in the top 10 and finished sixth at “The Tricky Triangle.”
SEASON-TO-DATE:After 14 NASCAR Sprint Cup races this season, Johnson owns the highest driver rating with a score of 108.5. The driver of the No. 48 Lowe’s/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet SS also holds the honor of the most laps led this season with 968. Johnson’s top-six performance at Pocono last weekend allowed him to maintain his fourth-place ranking in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings. He trails leader and teammate Jeff Gordon by 23 points.
HENDRICK STREAKS:Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s performance on Sunday at Pocono marked Hendrick Motorsports’ fourth consecutive points-paying Sprint Cup win in 2014. Gordon kicked off the current streak with his Kansas Speedway victory on May 10, which was followed by Johnson winning on May 25 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and June 1 at Dover International Speedway. It is the sixth separate time Hendrick Motorsports teams have combined to win at least four consecutive points races, including the 2007 Sprint Cup season when the organization posted three separate win streaks of four, five and six races apiece. The team also won four consecutive races in both 1996 and 1998.
TEST, TEST:Johnson and his No. 48 Lowe’s team will spend June 10-11 participating in a Goodyear tire test at Chicagoland Speedway.
MICHIGAN LOOP DATA:Johnson leads active drivers in several loop data categories in the last 18 races at Michigan, including laps led (505), fastest laps (357) and average start (7.8). Johnson also has the fourth-highest driver rating at Michigan with a score of 101.4 in the past 18 races at two-mile oval. The driver rating is a formula that combines wins, top-15 finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. The maximum a driver can earn in each race is 150 points. The driver rating number is used pre-race as a prediction tool and post-race as a performance evaluator.
JOHNSON AT MICHIGAN:In 24 starts at Michigan, Johnson has four top-five finishes, nine top-10s and has led 586 laps around the two-mile track. He is the only active driver in the Sprint Cup Series to have a career average starting position (8.9) inside the top 10 at the two-mile oval.
UPCOMING HOMETOWN HONOR: Johnson will return to his hometown of El Cajon, California, on June 17, where the city council of El Cajon will recognize his racing accomplishments and philanthropic contributions. Mayor Bill Wells, the city council, Senator Joel Anderson and other local dignitaries will be honoring Johnson during a special ceremony that begins at 11:00 a.m. local time at El Cajon’s Centennial Plaza. Portions of the event will be broadcast live on 101.5 KGB. For more details, visithttp://www.ci.el-cajon.ca.us/.
CHASSIS CHOICE:Crew chief Chad Knaus has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 48-797 for this weekend’s 400-mile race. Johnson last drove this chassis to Victory Lane in May’s 600-mile event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The backup car is Chassis No. 48-728, which Johnson most recently raced in March at Bristol Motor Speedway.

30TH ANNIVERSARY:In 2014, Hendrick Motorsports is celebrating its 30th anniversary in NASCAR. The organization began in 1984 with five employees and 5,000 square feet of work space. It has grown to more than 500 employees with a 430,000-square-foot facility that sits on 140 acres. Driver Geoff Bodine won the Martinsville Speedway spring race on April 29, 1984, marking Hendrick Motorsports’ first victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
JIMMIE JOHNSON, DRIVER, NO. 48 LOWE’S/KOBALT TOOLS CHEVROLET SS (ON FATHER’S DAY.):“I’m so thankful for everything my Dad (Gary Johnson) has done and the man he raised me to be. Just a lot of fun memories and then to have it flip and experience it and have your children look at you. My daughter, Genevieve, is at an age now where she gets it and she knows it’s a special day. We just went through Mother’s Day and had a total blast watching her get ready for Mom and make her a poster. She is really big into art and stuff so I’m sure she will make me a poster or something on Sunday. I’m just thoroughly enjoying being a Dad.”
JOHNSON (ON MICHIGAN.): “It seems like we run well at Michigan and then something usually happens to us, so we have been chasing a win for what seems like forever. There are always a lot of Chevrolet guests out at the track since its right down the road from Detroit, so it would be nice to see a Chevy in the winner’s circle for them. Hoping we can pull off a win at Michigan soon for this Lowe’s team, check it off the list and have a great celebration. So we are looking for a solid run this weekend."
