Doing the Perfect Doughnut
You’re probably working on perfecting your green lawn this spring, getting rid of ruts and holes, filling in the bare spots, eliminating the weeds and fertilizing for healthy grass.
We have a different plan in mind. We’re looking to tear up some grass this spring and summer. Primarily the grass in the frontstretch, right by the sponsor logo, right after taking the checkered flag. Texas, Talladega and Charlotte all come to mind as tracks with beautiful green fronstretch areas, just waiting for the No. 48 car to do a few celebratory doughnuts.
Our apologies in advance to the grounds crews at these tracks. We know they work very hard to develop and maintain a great lawn. And that we’re creating extra work when we do doughnuts on their grass. But it’s worth it for every fan that cheers on Team Lowe’s Racing.
So what goes into the victory celebration? How does each driver create their signature style to show off their win?
First, consider the car. You have to remember not to burn up the engine while you’re trying to spin the tires. This means a lot of work for the crew chief and engine team back at the race shop. You also have to consider the fuel level. If you won the race on fuel mileage, you don’t want to run out half-way through your burnout.
Second, put on a show. You want to create lots of smoke on the burnout. You want to produce lots of noise from revving the engine. There’s an art to managing the clutch, gas and brake and controlling the car – all while clutching the victory flag.
Third, leave your mark. Nothing says victory celebration like doughnuts across the grass. You want to make sure you are doing full circles and tearing up lots of grass. And, you want to leave tracks that will stay there for a while, reminding fans of the great race they saw.
While we don’t recommend that members of Team Lowe’s Racing attempt to do the perfect doughnut or burnout in their own car, we do want to help them create a great lawn. Just leave the victory celebrations to us!
