Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Aside from Yankee Stadium, there might be no more famous sporting venue in the country. With 250,000 seats, plus the wide-open spaces of the infield, it is the country's largest arena and one of the oldest. The first Indianapolis 500 was held in 1911. NASCAR racing came to the track in 1994, and one tradition was begun without smearing the other. Track owners brought in 3.2 million bricks to build a new surface for the first Indy 500. By 1936, asphalt was being applied to some of the rougher spots, and in 1961, the last of the bricks except for a ceremonial yard-wide strip was covered.
